Banana slug love:
The stem is the size of my hand...
Our beloved friend, Paul Brewman
The weekend winds down leaving in its wake a newfound love for surfing and memories of time well-spent. I have been in down south in Mckinleyville since Friday, the delicious start of this beautiful weekend, and I cannot recall a dull moment. Friday evening I went contra dancing with my friend Nate, a park ranger at the wolf creek outdoor school which is right next to my house and a pretty rad dude. Anyway, the dance was amazing-definitely one of my favorite contra dances ever. Exactly two women and three men complimented me on my swinging! And I converted one more person to the ways of Appalachia, as Nate had a blast and wants to go again.
Saturday day after lounging around for a few hours in the morning I went over to Jason and Emily's place and they cooked me a delicious lunch and we watched The Royal Tenenbaums (my first time!) and then I went outside and layed down next to the dog, Kalis, and we took a nap together on the patio. Rawson finally showed up around 6 or so, when we (Jason, Emily, Jack, one of Emily's friends from New York, Rawson, and Nate) all drove over to Clam Beach and played a game of ultimate Frisbee in the sand, also a blast, though incredibly exhausting. Around 8 we went back to the house and put away some beers and Jason lightly seared some salmon that he caught on Friday in Trinidad and cooked up some rice-it was the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. No, seriously. And I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The fog lifted for a few short moments to reveal a beautiful nighttime sky-the stars out here are so plentiful when it is not cloudy or foggy. So that was last night.
Today I went to Moonstone beach in Westhaven with Nate and he went surfing while I layed in the sun for a few hours, read, and got roasted-y'all should just call me lobster now. The beach was breathtakingly beautiful and filled with amazing surfers. It looks like so much fun and now I have dreams of being a surfer out here-I'll probably buy a board once I get on my feet and figure everything out. The ocean is my therapy.
Anyway, then we met up with Jason, Emily, and Rawson and watched the new Harry Potter movie, which is really good by the way. And now here I sit in Arcata at the Bon Boniere cafe, my beloved source of wireless internet and tofu melt sandwiches. I am exhausted and I miss my friends more than ever. Even in the company of all of these great people there is no substitute for anyone I know and love. I miss every single one of you so much.
I'm getting sleepy but I don't want to go home. One, the power's out and two, after such a fun-filled weekend the dullness of wolf creek might just be too much to bear. But for now I will wrap up this blogging venture and attempt to do something productive with the time I have left tonight. I hope you are all well. Keep being beautiful, friends.
Jess
