Helloooo everyone. It is Monday morning again and as usual I am dragging myself along until the coffee is ready. This morning we saw a huge black bear, probably 350 pounds, in our back yard. He was just there for a second before he saw us and ran off into the woods but it was pretty cool. That's the second one we've seen in a week. I think the last one was Thursday evening, right about dusk. Bears are such amazing animals.
Anyway, I haven't been up to much lately. Rawson and I were pretty much alone the whole weekend cause Adam was galavanting in Hiouchi-Friday we spent all day in town (Eureka and Arcata) piddling around and then Friday evening we watched the Arcata minor league baseball team play the Sacramento Scorch and that was a lot of fun, the most I've had in a while I'd say. We sat in the 'rowdy section,' which was so rowdy we were warned by the announcer to drink responsibly (I, of course, wasn't drinking because I drove, like a good little responsible Jessica). But we were screaming and cheering the whole time and singing little songs and it was just a blast. And we won 6-2! I'll probably go to a lot more baseball games in the future. Saturday we went on a bike ride to Cal Barrel Road and then hiked in on an old trail and just sat in a small floor clearing and wrote, read, and just listened to the forest. It was definitely much needed medicine, to just sit and be still and quiet and not talk at all. The time came to go home so we did and then our friend Mike from upstairs in archaeology in SOC stopped by and fed us delicious french cheeses and smoked salmon and we drank a beer and guessed how many beer caps were in Paul Brewman then counted them. 148!! It was a pretty quiet evening and we went to bed early. Yesterday Rawson and I went into Arcata again and got some groceries, did some emailing and the like and then came back to the house, ate some quesadillas and fell asleep in the living room. And that was my weekend. It was chill and I appreciate that after the long week at work. I was really tired all last week from my backpacking trip so it was good to have a nice relaxing weekend and not really do anything. This weekend will be full of adventure-there's an outdoor bluegrass concert on Thursday, a contra dance on Friday, and a free all-day folk festival on Saturday so I'm gonna be busy with stuff that will remind me of home so much.
Today we are hiking near the tall trees grove to do some old growth plot sampling-be jealous, because old growth sampling is one of the most amazing things I've ever done. I think we're hiking out on the emerald ridge trail and then crossing Redwood Creek-Adam and Franz are even coming with us today so it's just gonna be a big old growth party. Well, we're about ready to take off I think, earliest we've left all season. I hope you all are doing well.
love
Jess
